From Creative Expressions to

Algebraic Expressions

Facilitated by Lana Steiner,  Secretary of the SMTS
April 14, 2021 from 7:00 – 8:00pm
Experience how one teacher introduces patterning and algebra by engaging students’ creativity and imagination. Learn how students’ creative expressions are morphed into algebraic expressions through the progression of concrete – pictorial/representational – abstract. The activities presented in this session are ‘low floor, high ceiling’ and address the need for differentiated learning in the classroom. This will be a hands-on session. This session is ideal for educators in Grades 3-8.

Using Number Talks Alongside Addition & Subtraction Teachings

Facilitated by Chad Williams,  President of the SMTS
April 20, 2021 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm
Number Talks is such a powerful routine to build number sense in our students. In this session, participants will learn how Number Talks can be used alongside the teaching and learning of addition and subtraction. We will look at the learning progressions for addition and subtraction as we build on our students previous understanding and experiences with mathematics. This session is ideal for educators in Grades 1-4.

Math Routines to Spark Curiosity and Classroom Discourse

Facilitated by Chad Williams,  President of the SMTS
April 28, 2021 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm
Leverage student curiosity and classroom discussion with quick math routines to start your math class. Participants will be introduced to and engage in ten powerful math routines that teachers can start using in their classroom tomorrow.  This session is ideal for educators in Grades K-8.

Math Games in the Middle Years

Facilitated by Kirsten Dyck,  Member at Large of the SMTS
May 4, 2021 from 7:00 – 8:00 pm
Incorporating math games into your classroom is fun, and also builds collaboration and fluency.
