The Variable – Volume 3, Issue 2

Volume 3, Issue 2 (March/April 2018) of The Variable, periodical of the Saskatchewan Mathematics Teachers’ Society, has just been released! From Kindergarten to Grade 12, there is something for everyone.

In this month’s issue, Jehu Peters explores a few interesting probability puzzles that lead to some surprising resultsKendra Lomax, Kristin Alfonzo, Sarah Dietz, Ellen Kleyman, and Elham Kazemi try out three-act tasks in Kindergarten; and Patrick Maidorn discusses what makes a good math problem in this issue’s Spotlight on the Profession. You will also find our regular features, including Shawn Godin‘s “Alternate Angles,” which takes an in-depth look at intriguing problems and their solutions; “Intersections,” which will bring you up to date on upcoming professional development opportunities; and “Problems to Ponder,” where you will find a variety of interesting tasks for your K-12 classroom.

Last but not least, this month’s issue features the latest installment of “Math Ed Matters by MatthewMaddux,” a column by Egan Chernoff telling “slightly bent, untold, true stories of mathematics teaching and learning.” In this issue, Chernoff tackles a favourite antiquated argument from math class: “What are you doing to do, pull a calculator out in the middle of a crowded restaurant to calculate the tip!?”
